Physical Education & Health

After reading Jessica's post it seems that she has covered the reasons why Physical Education and Health are important classes, and as a teacher there is a lot of knowledge that has to be passed down to the students to make sure they comprehend the goals of the lessons. I always get the same responses from people when I tell them that I am pursing a career as a physical educator, "Oh, so your gonna be a gym teacher!"
It seems to me that a lot of people don't consider physical education as an important part of the curriculum. With a majority of today's youth facing childhood obesity the student's need to learn the importance of maintaing a healthy lifestyle and exercising, knowledge that should be learned in phys. ed. Also, in Health class, the teacher must educate the students on the dangers of drug use, unprotected sex, teen pregnancy and contracting an STD. These are lessons not covered in any other courses in the curriculum and that is why knowledge plays a key role in the teaching of physical education and health.

I agree with your statement about how many people don't think that physical education is an important part of our curriculum. Personally, if I would have not gotten a break from my classes each day to run around and get a good workout, I probably would have gone crazy sitting through classes all day. I think that we do need to do a better job working with the students in physical education and better developing our lessons but in no way shape or form do I think we should ever eliminate physical education from the curriculum. Learning about how to live a healthy lifestyle at an early age, will help us to stay in shape when we get older. Obesity problems need to be adressed, rather then eliminate phys ed and watching obesity become even worse.

I think that phys ed is a very important part of school. Case and point: childhood obesity. when i was growing up i played outside for the most part, partly because the video games sucked compared to now (except a few classics...super mario bros, etc.), but mainly because i was so active. i thought playing tackle football with friends, late night manhunt, or causing mischeif was alot better than playing hours of Halo. If kids arent going to exercise at home than the only better place would be at school. this also gets kids interested in school sports. i feel as though sports are an important part of social development. even if the student is not interesting in the sport or enjoys athletics at all, it still gives them a break from the classroom. getting fresh air or running around for an hour is somethign that every kid needs and the thought of eliminating gym class should never be contemplated!
