I think that Dr. Dana has us reading one of the three of these books for a few reasons. When we first entered the class she had discussed with us of why we are even taking this class. As a physical education major, I admit I didn't know why they had to add this as one f my requirements. But she had explained that literacy is everywhere and no matter where we are or what subject we teach, reading will be apart of it.
The book that I am reading in my group is Freedom Writers which entails many situations and topics among students at a school. These situations could occur when I am a teacher and it is helpful to see how the teacher in this book deals with it. Today there are so many issues with racism, sexism, and sexuality that I will one day have to deal with.

and how are we going to be able to combat all of those things in our classroom, while actually enabling our students to learn? How can we bring whats going on on the outside, to our classroom? At least I think that is the point of reading Freedom Writers.
I agree that Dr. Dana is having us read these books to establish an understanding on literacy and how it is important in every major. I too questioned why as an art major I had to take this class, but now as the semester is coming to an end, I understand. Like the situations in the books that we are reading, we are going to come across situations in the class room that has to deal with literacy. As teachers, we are going to have to help our students with their difficulties, and this class, these books are educating us on how to do so while teaching.
I'm reading Teacher Man, and he starts out in the book as a new teacher, fresh out of college. All of the struggles he faces in his first year will probably somehow relate to my own struggles in the classroom my first years. A lot of the problems he faces come directly from the home lives of his students, and how that gets brought into school. I think this is an important thing for all of us to remember: As teachers, we are not only going to be teaching our subject, but also giving advice and dealing with at-home problems of students.
I think literacy is everywhere too. We as future teacher have to be prepared to face all different kind of issues such as drugs, violence, alcohol, teenager pregnancy, disruptive families and so on. Only if we read about all of them we will find an answer and a solution to this situations. Helping our students to face and deal with it is our theme.
