While all parts of literacy are important, I'd say the most important part is understanding. Nothing you read or listen to will mean anything if you have no idea what they mean. If you can't understand what you're looking at or listening to, what's the point??

OK, Denise, but what does it take to reach that understanding? I want to push you to think through your posts more deeply, and in greater detail -- what you have here is good as a beginning, but doesn't really begin to think deeply about what understanding means, how we achieve it, and how as teachers we can foster it.
