technology & unit plan

I feel that technology has changed the way that our generation reads and writes. By having technology accessible to us at all times (i.e. computers, phones, ipods, t.v., radio, etc.), our generation is taking full advantage of reading and writing, even if we are unaware as to what we are doing when we are doing it. We have been using computers for some time now, whether it be for writing papers, searching websites, emailing, instant messaging, blogging, and so forth. But now technology has brought us to an era of reading and writing on a daily basis, so often that we probably wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if the things that we take for granted disappeared all of a sudden. Our phones have now become a way to search the Internet, communicate with others, play games, listen to music... the list goes on and on, and we have technology to thank. We are even re-inventing literacy as technology moves forward. We are creating our own language by texting and instant messaging. By using "ttys," "lol," "omg," we created a language that allows us to read and write faster, that only if you are literate in this new language can you do so.

Myself and Beth have met to start on our unit planning, and so far so good. I think that the both of us are going to work well together due to each of us being creative and open minded. We both know what we want our unit to be on, what grade it will be for, the time we are allowing for the unit, and what we want to happen as far as the unit goes. We already came up with the main theme for the unit and even created some essential questions that we are going to want our students to be able to answer after the unit is complete. We know what our main goals and ideas are for this unit. I am certain that with our partnership in this unit planning it will go smoothly and be educative for the both of us.

We really do take it for granted what we have accessible to us on a daily basis. We spend hours of reading and writing on a computer each and every week. I think about how much less I would be reading if these things were not around. I would probably end up choosing doing other things rather then reading a book. For me, I use computers on a daily basis at any given time of the day. This is probably my most important outlet for reading and writing.

I thought this post was a really interesting and had a great point. In school my mother was taught shorthand, which is a faster way to write using letters and symbols, texting using this like lol or ttyl are a way to show that our generation is trying to read/write faster.

I agree with your your post about technology changing the way that our generation reads and writes. I am constantly text messaging my friends rather than just dialing them up and actually talking to them. I am also constantly making the mistake of using the text message lingo that I have grown so accustomed to over the correct spelling of the actual word in many of my papers! (bcuz instead of because) I'm thankful for spell check programs!

i totally agree with trish, we may not realize it but we are taking full advantage of all rwading and writing activities. technology has really revolutionized the way a classroom works, in this class alone we use laptops, blog messages (something that is totally new to me), and can even reach you through IM, e-mail, or myspace. technology has allowed us to contact people in an array of different ways. one thing that i have become dependent on is texting, i almost prefer it over talking on the phone. I feel as though the computer is also an important key. I do most of my reading on the computer whether it be downloading pdf's from the school library, or checking up my fantasy football team. i am able to read injury reports, get advice, preview matchups, at the same time, by simply opening different windows. Technological advances have played a huge role in the way that our society reads and writes..
