Learning to Read

Wow! It's hard to think back to when I learned how to read! I guess some of my first school memories are when the teacher would split us up into groups in first grade and we would be in guided reading groups at different tables in the classroom. I also remember reading a lot of stories at home with my parents before going to bed; sometimes they would read the stories and other times they would let me read. Another memory that comes to mind is when we would take turns reading in class, usually from an anthology. I remember always being nervous for when it would be my turn to read in front of the class, as I did not want to "mess up" or mispronounce (if that's a word) something, and have the teacher correct me. Does anyone else remember being worried about that?

I had a very similar experience being split into groups in first grade and reading with a few other kids and the teacher. I was always more nervous when we read as the whole class if another student would correct me. It's good to hear your parents read to you at home a lot. Mine did the same, I think it probably gives you more confidence, and obviously more practice, than you get at school.

I was also very nervous when it came to reading in front of the class. We dicussed in class the idea of what makes a good reader- and I had decided that I was not a good reader- and I always assumed others felt the same way about me. Bbt do we judge ourselves more harshly then our peers? and who really does decide whether or not we're good readers?

I also had a similar experience. I would get really nervous when we were supposed to read in front of the class. I would be worried that I was going to pronounce words wrong and that everyone would laugh at me! Luckily I survived elementary school and have become a more confident reader throughout the years!

I've always hated reading in front of the class too. Somehow words I pronounce correctly in my head sometimes come out wrong when I'm reading out loud.
We were split up in forst grade too, but rather than having groups within the same class, in my elementary school we had say, 2 first grade classes and the "smarter" kids were in one and every one else was in the other
